Issue No. 325 of Sector Ejecutivo (November 2026) features an interview with Pablo García Mexía, conducted by Manuel de los Santos, on the occasion of the publication of his book Elogio de la razón digital.
The interview addresses several major questions surrounding artificial intelligence and digital technologies, including their influence on human nature, technological innovation, economic competitiveness, employment and regulation.
One of the central themes is the relationship between artificial intelligence and human capabilities. García Mexía reflects on the possibility of machines surpassing certain human intellectual abilities and emphasises the importance of other dimensions of the human mind, particularly creativity, emotion and wisdom.
From an economic perspective, he highlights the role of technological innovation as a driver of growth and examines the importance of digital technologies for the competitiveness of Western economies, with particular attention to Europe’s gap with the United States.
The interview also explores the relationship between regulation, the protection of rights and innovation. García Mexía questions the assumption that protecting rights must necessarily be achieved through regulation alone, emphasising that technological development can itself contribute to their effective enjoyment.
Other topics include the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, the importance of workforce training and the opportunities and risks associated with digital technology use among children and adolescents.
García Mexía proposes reversing the conventional approach to these technologies: acknowledging their risks from the outset in order to address them, while avoiding making those risks the centre of the debate. Instead, he argues that technological progress and human beings should take centre stage.
