The Senate Approves the First Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Spanish Parliament

The Spanish Senate recently approved the first guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the parliamentary sphere, applicable to both senators and all Senate staff.

Pablo García Mexía highlighted the pioneering nature of this initiative, which makes the Senate the first Spanish parliamentary institution to establish a specific framework for the use of AI systems in its institutional activities.

These guidelines aim to improve the efficiency and quality of constitutional functions and administrative management, ensuring at all times respect for fundamental ethical and legal principles, including human oversight, privacy and personal data protection, and transparency in the use of these technologies.

Likewise, the Senate plans to launch a continuing education program for all its staff to ensure adequate understanding of the capabilities, limitations, and risks associated with artificial intelligence systems.

The adoption of these guidelines represents a significant step toward the responsible integration of technology into democratic institutions, setting a benchmark for AI governance in the public sector.
