Conference at the Autónoma University of Madrid on AI and the Fundamental Right to Data Protection

On February 27, the Autónoma University of Madrid hosted the conference “AI and the Fundamental Right to Data Protection: Regulatory Intersections,” an academic and institutional event dedicated to analyzing the relationship between the AI Regulation and the GDPR.

The opening remarks were delivered by the university’s rector, Amaya Mendikoetxea, setting the institutional tone for the discussion. The keynote address was given by Francisco Perez Bes, who offered a clear overview of the interaction between the AI Regulation and the GDPR from the perspective of the supervisory authority.

Pablo García Mexía presented and moderated the roundtable discussion on the main challenges at the intersection of AI and data protection, which featured the participation of:

The conference addressed issues such as biometrics, human oversight, and transparency, combining technical analysis with practical implications to ensure fundamental rights.

The closing presentation was delivered by Fco. Javier Torres Gella, who highlighted the initiatives promoted by the European Union to harmonize regulations. The institutional closing remarks were given by Blanca Rodriguez-Chaves Mimbrero and Ana Barrero Tiscar, emphasizing the centrality of the individual and vulnerable groups in technological development.

The conference reaffirms that the conversation about AI goes beyond technology: it is legal, institutional, and deeply democratic.
