The Public University of Navarra (UPNA) closed on November 8 the International Congress "Biometrics, Administrative Law and Data", a high-level meeting in which eighteen experts from Spain, France and Italy analyzed the ethical and legal challenges of the use of biometrics in a context of constant technological progress. Among the distinguished speakers was Pablo García Mexía, lawyer of the Spanish Parliament and consultant-director of Digital Law at Herbert Smith Freehills, who provided his analysis of the regulatory implications of biometric systems in the European framework.

During two days, the congress addressed crucial issues such as the regulation of artificial intelligence, the protection of citizens' rights and the complexities of the regulatory framework in Europe and other territories. García Mexía, together with Martín Razquin Lizarraga, professor at the UPNA, offered an exhaustive analysis of the European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence and its implications for the implementation of biometric technologies in public administrations and companies.

The event, held at the Navarre Institute of Public Administration (INAP), was also attended by experts such as José Luis Piñar Mañas, former director of the Spanish Data Protection Agency, and other academics and professionals who discussed privacy protection, secure storage of biometric data and the most advanced techniques in this field.

The congress, organized within the framework of the BIODATA project, funded by the State Research Agency and the Ministry of Science and Innovation, concluded with a presentation by Tomás de la Quadra-Salcedo Fernández del Castillo, professor emeritus of the Carlos III University, who stressed the importance of an ethical and legal reflection on the use of artificial intelligence in today's society.
